Update from Mrs. Neal

Junior High

The 8th and 7th grades rotation classes changed at semester time. I have the 8th graders in a career development exploration class. There are 8 8 graders in the class this semester. The first part of the semester has been spent on exploring their personality types, learning styles, and if they are left/right/whole brain dominant. We are correlating the results of the three to explore careers which fit each individual. Each student is doing research on one of the careers to find the education needed, salary, location and if they would like or dislike this particular career. This is the beginning of the semester’s curriculum theme on self-awareness and discovery.

Elementary grades

I visit K-4th grades, rotation on Tuesdays and Thursdays, using the “Second Step” curriculum. There are several themes included in the curriculum; respect, empathy, focusing, skills for learning, emotion management, problem solving, and self-regulation. Currently, we are working on the learning skills.

The 5th graders are working on careers. Presently, they are researching a career of their choice: location, education, salary and if this is a career that they would like to do or not to do. The students were given research resources to use to find the information needed to complete the project. Each student will give a presentation on their research findings.

Seniors

The seniors are working on scholarships. Six seniors are continuing their mentoring with the elementary grades. The mentoring program has been very successful: the seniors are learning from their mentees and the mentees are learning from their mentors. The classroom teachers appreciate the extra help that students are getting from the mentors.
