Week in Review

Another week in the books for Maverick Athletics. Here is the week in review!

Varsity Volleyball played a home triangular against Hyannis and Wallace. The Lady Mavericks had a slow start in the first set against Hyannis losing the first set 14-25. In the second set Sandhills Valley made a solid run to try and force a third set before ultimately falling in two 21-25.

During the match versus Hyannis the Lady Mavericks were led by Rhayana Bruns with six kills. Shelby Layher contributed four kills and a pair of blocks. Lexi Hagan provided 10 assists to lead all Lady Mavericks in that category.

In their second game of the evening Sandhills Valley played the Wallace Wildcats. Once again a slow start doomed the Mavericks as they fell 16-25.  A lineup change did provide a spark and many of the younger Lady Wildcats saw their first solid action of Varsity Volleyball. The second set was a back and forth affair but the Wallace Wildcats prevailed 22-25.

Stats were not currently available on Max Preps for this game as of this write up. The Lady Mavericks fell to 0-5 on the year, but host Mullen this week in Tryon during homecoming looking to pick up their first W of the season.

The Maverick Football team took a long trip out west to Bayard on Friday. The first half of action saw a lot of offense from both teams. Neither defense could stop the other. Each offense had multiple chances to score at will - and score they did! At the end of the first half the score was Bayard 36 Sandhills Valley 34.

Both teams came out in the second half looking to make adjustments. Early those adjustments worked. The Mavericks had success moving the ball down the field on multiple occasions, but struggled to put any points on the board. Conversely, the Mavericks defense tightened up as well and kept Bayard off the board for about 23 min of the second half.

With a little over three minutes to go in the game Cooper Layher broke free for a long run from the fullback position to give the Mavericks the lead 42-36.  The lead would not last however, and Bayard pulled even at 42 before obtaining the final two points to go ahead 44-42. A  last ditch effort by the Mavericks was stopped short with 15 seconds left after Bayard recovered a fumble. Bayard ran out the clock and walked away with a 44-42 victory.

The Mavericks were led in the game by Cayson Johnston's 380 all-purpose yards along with two very long impressive TD's (one rushing and one on a kick return for a TD).

Leyton Connell provided 145 yards on the ground and the air along with two scores.

Defensively, the Mavericks were led by  a trio of double digit tacklers - Johnston, Connell, and Isaac Goosey. Cooper Layher and Colton Miller both had 2 TFL's as well.

Sandhills Valley fell to 0-2 on the year and looks to pick up their first win this week versus Mullen in Tryon during Homecoming.
