Third Grade Structures

This past week we made structures that we tested to see if they could withstand a tornado, earthquake, high rains, and the kids favorite: mudslides!  Our structures are made out of two sizes of marshmallows, toothpicks, and two sizes of popsicle sticks. We simulated a tornado by having a blow dryer blow on the structures. We picked up the table and shook it around to simulate an earthquake. We poured water on the top to see if it would leak through to simulate high rains from weather like hurricanes. Then we simulated a crushing mudslide by dropping a large book on the top of our structures. Most structures survived the mudslide!  But, none of the structures survived the rain.  They all leaked!

We talked about some essential things that you need to have in order to reduce weather related hazard. The main conclusion for this is a good roof that doesn't leak! As well as a strong foundation that will withstand being shook!
